“A Dark & Stormy Night” is an unusual project. 52 different Western writers were each given the same prompt. In this particular case, the prompt was an homage to Charles Schultze and Snoopy: “It was a dark and stormy night.”
Each writer was required to use this prompt as the first sentence for their 500-word story, and then they were off to the races. What you’ll find is 52 unique takes and unique stories. Writing short stories, like giving a short speech, can be very challenging — in many cases, if not most, more challenging than something longer. And in this case, coming up with a coherent, compelling, complete story in 500 words is quite a challenge. But each of the writers wrote to that challenge, and you’ll find some terrific stories!
One of the exciting things about “A Dark & Stormy Night” is the variety of writers you get to sample. Many are familiar names to those of us who love Westerns, some remembered and some forgotten. Some are writers from other genres, stretching their wings and trying a Western, with terrific results. And, maybe the most exciting, for a couple of the writers, it is for their first time being published.
It’s an easy book to read in one sitting or, depending on your reading style, maybe to be savor one story at a time. Readers from both camps have written me and let me know “their way” is the way to go.
If you find you enjoy this book (available in both paperback and Kindle formats), you’ll find the first in the series, “The Shot Rang Out,” to be equally satisfying, and you can look forward to the soon-to-be released third book in the series, “Bourbon and A Good Cigar.” It is well worth noting that these books are beautifully designed and every page has at least one photo, all of which adds to the overall experience and enjoyment.
I hope you give it a try, and I’d love to hear your feedback.
Thank you, and enjoy!
